Security agencies in Mityana Municipality have arrested 25 suspects during a night intelligence-led operation targeting areas believed to be hotspots for criminal activity.
The operation followed increasing complaints from residents over rising cases of burglary, theft, mugging and substance abuse within the municipality.
The joint operation, conducted by Police and other intelligence agencies under the command of the District Police Commander (DPC) Mityana, focused on areas including Kabule in Ttamu Division, as well as Gombolola, Katanga and Kibibi Garage in Busimbi Division.
Security officials say the targeted locations have recently been associated with criminal gangs and illegal activities that have threatened the safety of residents and businesses.
According to Lameck Kigozi, the operation was intended to restore public confidence and strengthen security within the municipality.
“We responded to public concerns regarding increasing incidents of burglary, break-ins, theft, mugging and drug abuse. The operation was intelligence-led and specifically targeted areas suspected to be harbouring criminals,” SSP Kigozi said.
During the operation, security officers recovered several exhibits believed to facilitate criminal activities, including marijuana and suspected housebreaking implements.
The recovered items are expected to be used as evidence in ongoing investigations.
“All the suspects are currently detained at CPS Mityana pending screening. Those found innocent and without any connection to criminal activity will be released, while those against whom evidence is established will be charged accordingly,” Kigozi added.
Police said some of the suspects could face charges related to possession of housebreaking tools, narcotics abuse and other criminal offences depending on the outcome of investigations.
Security authorities have reassured residents that operations aimed at eliminating criminal gangs and improving public safety will continue across the municipality.
“Our goal is to ensure that Mityana remains safe for both residents and businesses. We remain committed to fighting crime and creating a secure environment for social and economic development,” SSP Kigozi noted.
Residents in some parts of the municipality have recently raised concern over increasing insecurity, especially during night hours, with cases of phone snatching, theft and attacks on pedestrians reportedly becoming more common.
Police have encouraged members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by sharing information that may help identify criminal elements operating within their communities.
